- Spice Storage, Nutrition, and Usage -
How long do spices last?
Spices don’t “go bad” like other foods. They do, however, lose their potency over time. The reason is that spices get their aroma and taste (together that’s flavor!) from their essential oils. Over time, those essential oils evaporate: more quickly so once ground. So, while whole spices can maintain their full flavor for several years we recommend replacing ground spices yearly. The best practical test for spice freshness is simply smelling them. If they smell weak or have no aroma, they probably won’t have much flavor and should be replaced.
What is the best way to store spices?
Airtight glass jars are the ideal storage containers for spices. It is best to store spices in cool and dark locations, making a drawer or cabinet your best options. Storing them near the stove or windows will degrade your spices more quickly. We do recommend storing certain products, like Tomato Powder, in the refrigerator to extend the shelf life and prevent clumping – usually the result of sugar content. Ask a spice merchant for more information.
Where can I find dietary information?
You can find this information for each spice at lsqspice.com.
Does Lincoln Square Spice Co. use any anti-caking agents?
No. On occasion with a few products this will lead to clumping – especially in high humidity environments. We recommend these items be stored in the refrigerator. Tomato Powder is an excellent example.
